Highland View PTO:  March Need-to-Knows

Hello Highland View Families!

That meeting was actually a lot of fun.  I'm so excited for all the things we have coming up at our school.  Here's the short version, with just what you need to know:

1)  The Fun Fair is ready to rock and roll!  A couple issues from the past have been addressed, so expect MAXIMUM FUN!  If you're interested in helping out, you can still contact Paula at psibilia5@yahoo.com and she'll find a role for you.  Be sure to check out an assortment of some of the prizes in the display case by the office, or save your tickets to try to win a new bike, a Galaxy tablet, or 32" flat screen TV!

2)  And while you're checking out the prizes in the display case, do a little shopping at the Book Fair going on all week (even during the Fun Fair!)  If you have some time before or after school, you can even (please!) sign up to work the Book Fair register or help clean up the Book Fair when it's over.  Check out your opportunities here.  Points and bonuses from the book fair go towards books for all of our classroom and special subject teachers.  You can also find teachers' specific Wish Lists if you want to help out directly!

3)  After meeting with the Village Manager and Police Chief, the Village will be increasing the number of stop signs at our Ramsey intersections, which should increase visibility and reduce the chance of drivers not stopping due to simply not seeing the signs.

4)  Remember to get your Target Red Card linked to Highland View.  Target sends 1% of all linked sales to the school, and it can really add up.  The funds received just between September and February were enough to cover over half the cost of the all-day buses the 4th graders took to their BizTown event last week!  Use your Red Card and we'll be able to cover the whole thing next year!

5)  Parents-as-Partners--tomorrow--be there!  Greendale School district's annual Parents-as-Partners conference is TOMORROW (3/11).  In addition to learning techniques to help your student organize their homework time, or to better understand the upcoming Badger standardized tests, there'll be opportunities for students (1st grade + ) to engage in story time and fitness activities, and child care for younger kids (potty trained through 5K).  The theme is "Supporting Your Child's Developing Brain" which just seems like a darn good idea.  You can read more, or register here.  See you there!

Thanks so much for being involved in your student's journey through Highland View!

We've got the Fun Fair on the agenda (it's THIS FRIDAY!) an update on upgrading our stop signs, and discussion of a couple bylaw amendments.

Also, the Book Fair is going on right now!  We use the points and bonuses from the Book Fair to buy books for classroom teachers through the school, and any help is super appreciated.  You can sign up for volunteer opportunities  here:  http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0a4fada82fa75-under.  Remember, you need to have your Greendale School District volunteer paperwork up to date in order to volunteer during school hours.

Proposed Highland View PTO Bylaw Changes

Highland View PTO
Proposed Bylaw Amendments
For consideration at the general meeting 3/9/2015
To be voted on at the general meeting 4/20/2015

Amendment 1:

Article 3  Section D

Reason for amendment:
To apply for tax exempt status, the IRS requires very specific language.  In the past, the language was looser, and Article 3 appears to be an attempt to fulfill that requirement.  However, if we are going to be tax exempt, we need to update the bylaws to meet the current requirements.

Previously:
Section D.  In the event of the dissolution of this organization, its assets shall be distributed for one or more of the exempt purposes specified in Sec. 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1954 as from time to time amended, with the limitation that the purposes be related to the public education of Highland View School children.

Proposed:
Section D.    The purpose or purposes for which the organization is organized:
The organization is organized exclusively for charitable purposes under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, or corresponding section of any future federal tax code.

Section E.    Limitations on the distribution of net earnings of the organization:
No part of the net earnings of the organization shall inure to the benefit of, or be distributable to its members, trustees, officers, or other private persons, except that the organization shall be authorized and empowered to make payments and distributions in furtherance of the purposes set forth in Section D. No substantial part of the activities of the organization shall be the carrying on of propaganda, or otherwise attempting to influence legislation, and the organization shall not participate in, or intervene in (including the publishing or distribution of statements) any political campaign on behalf of or in opposition to any candidate for public office.  Notwithstanding any other provision of these articles, the organization shall not carry on any other activities not permitted to be carried on (a) by an organization exempt from federal income tax under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, or the corresponding section of any future federal tax code, or (b) by an organization, contributions to which are deductible under section 170(c)(2) of the Internal Revenue Code, or the corresponding section of any future federal tax code.

Section F.  Distribution of assets upon dissolution of the organization:
Upon the dissolution of this organization, assets shall be distributed for one or more exempt purposes within the meaning of section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, or corresponding section of any future federal tax code, or shall be distributed to the federal government, or to a state or local government, for a public purpose.

Amendment 2:

Article 5  Section F

Reason for amendment:
Remove the requirement that an officer can only run for a third term if no one else is also running.

Previously:
Section F.  A person shall not be eligible to serve more than two consecutive terms in the same office, unless no other candidates come forward for nomination.

Proposed:
Remove Section F.
